Election Day: Tuesday, November 7th
| Prop | Description | Colin's Vote | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Denial of bail for illegal immigrants | This is a simple human rights issue. Although not protected as citizens under our constitution, foreign aliens should be treated the same in the eyes of the law. |
Property tax limitations | Property taxes are a vital source of funding for the state government and setting what would effectively be a cap on them can only hurt the state. |
Denial of punitive damages for illegal immigrants | This would further perpetuate a second class and would only be abused at the expense of the immigrants. |
English as the state's official language | Although fairly arbitrary, this proposition is simply racist, and is aimed at giving legal justification to those upset with the proliferation of Spanish as a language in our culture. |
Municipal debt cap increase | This would allow municipalities to borrow up to 20% of their taxable property value (versus the current 6%) to pay for things like fire and police services. Public services need all the funding they can get. |
State Trust Lands | This was put up by the Phoenix Homebuilders Association in response to Prop 106. No one else supports this but them and some of their lackeys in the state legislature. |
Conserving Arizona's Future | Sets aside thousands of acres of State Trust Land in Arizona to be solely used for conservation, and sets up a requirement for communities to work with a board of trustees to include conservation into their planning. |
Protect Marriage | Not only does this define marriage as being between a man and a woman, but it would also make it illegal for employers to provide benefits to unmarried partners and their children, regardless of sexual orientation. |
Voter Reward | This is completely ridiculous. The state lotto funds to be used now go to education which is underfunded in this state. And anyway, people shouldn't need a prize as an incentive to vote. |
Smoke-Free Arizona | I believe that bars should be able to decide for themselves whether or not to allow smoking. (See 206 below) |
Raise Minimum Wage to $6.75 | It should be higher. You still can't live off of that. |
Early Childhood Development | Providing more funding for education is rarely a bad thing. |
Humane Treatment of Farm Animals | Basically calls for increased cage sizes. |
Auto-Mail Ballots | Voting by mail saves money and is easier for just about everyone. Making it more convenient for the voter is exactly what is needed. |
Non-Smoker Protection | Similar to 201 except that bars are excluded, but required to create ventilation systems and prohibit minors in smoking areas when part of a larger business. |
Private Property Protection | This is another extremely deceptive product of the homebuilding industry. |
Public Programs Eligibility | Another racist, anti-immigrant extension to 2004's Prop 200, which unfortunately passed. |
Denial of Probation for Meth Users | We've already found that simply throwing drug addicts into jail is not the answer to the problem. It needs to be addressed in other ways. |
State Legislature Salary Increase | This it the exact same proposal that was on the ballot in 2004. I believe they need an increase in salary, but the 50% increase here ($24k to $36k) is just too much. We're not exactly missing out on candidates by not offering a competitive salary.
